Canterbury is probably England´s most recognised cathedral city. The iconic, gothic towers of the famous cathedral are visible from any direction in the city and dominate the skyline. At just under 560 feet high, the Mother Church of the Anglican Communion presides over the city and attracts over 2.5 million visitors every year. Canterbury also boasts the title of world heritage site, with St Augustine´s Abbey and St Martin´s Church also contributing to the rich history of the city. The site of the first Franciscan Monastary in Britain ‘Greyfriars’ is also nearby.
The city also offers a pedestrian high street packed with numerous shops, bars and bistros to suit every taste. Along with visitor attractions such as The Canterbury Tales and the Roman and Heritage Museums, this makes for a unique combination. Canterbury is less than 1 mile in diameter, so modern culture is only a short walk from Medieval England.
The city is also home to a number of gardens: The Westgate Gardens with highly praised floral displays offer punting trips along the river Stour. The Dane John Gardens are less formal, offering a children´s maze, bandstand and fountain. What ever your preference, both gardens provide a green hideaway in amongst the busy city.
Canterbury is at the heart of Kent, the ‘Garden of England’, surrounded by small, traditional villages and towns, which are also worth exploring. Why not explore the sights of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, such as Sissinghurst Gardens or the historic Hever Castle. Further afield are the harbour towns of Whitstable and Herne Bay, the latter once a haunt of smugglers.
Whether it´s heritage or shopping, city life or countryside, this breathtaking city can offer a multitude of things to see and do and is certain not to disappoint. With the perfect blend of city, countryside and coast, Canterbury will ensure you are spoilt for choice.
