A message from Sr. Margaret McGrath FMSJ

Welcome.

The Franciscans arrived in Canterbury in September 1224 and within two years had spread as far as the university town of Oxford. There they quickly established themselves in both the academic and pastoral areas.

The Franciscan International Study Cantre (FISC) continues that long unbroken tradition of study, prayer and practical pastoral reflection. With its combination of community life, prayer, academic study and a location steeped in wonderful history, the Centre is a testament of St Francis’ exhortation that the spirit of prayer and devotion be never extinguished.

Situated in the ancient and beautiful World Heritage Site of Canterbury, the Study Centre is an ideal location for studies in Theology, Philosophy, Franciscan Spirituality and History. The Centre also offers courses in Spiritual Direction as well as a quiet, reflective and restful period of Sabbatical.

A thoughtful approach to Theology and Spirituality, underpinned by a prayerful community life means the that FISC is a unique place to engage in Franciscan studies as well as the broader aspects of the interesting areas of Theology and Spirituality in the Universal Church.

The Franciscan International Study Centre is a member of the Franciscan International Academic Federation which seeks to highlight and increase collaboration between Franciscan Institutes of learning. This ensures that the Franciscan vision and expression of Theology and Spirituality remain ever fresh and ever available to the Church and the world.

The celebration of the Eucharist, the Prayer of the Church, an excellent library, scholars of the highest calibre, good food, a pleasant location all ensure that mind, body and spirit are all catered for.

Whatever the student’s academic level, be it certificate, diploma, under-graduate or post-graduate, or for those seeking a time of sabbatical rest and relaxation combined with some reflective engagement, the staff at the Centre will be only too happy to help you achieve this.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Franciscan international Study Centre at Canterbury and if we can help you in any way please contact us.

On behalf of all the staff

Sister Margaret McGrath FMSJ
Director of Sabbaticals & Spiritual Direction
