Canon Law: The People of God

Syllabus
The module comprises a mixture of lectures and seminars covering canons 204-572 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law. The following topics are covered:
Part I: Christ’s Faithful
The Obligations and Rights of all Christ’s Faithful
The Obligations and Rights of the Lay Members of Christ’s Faithful
Sacred Ministers or Clerics
Personal Prelatures
Associations of Christ’s Faithful
Part II The Hierarchical Constitution of the Church
Section I: The Supreme Authority of the Church
The Roman Pontiff and College of Bishops
Synod of Bishops
Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church
The Roman Curia
Papal Legates
Section II: Particular Churches and the Authority Constituted Within Them
Groupings of Particular Churches
Internal Ordering of Particular Churches
Significant canons in each section will be analysed and the theological underpinning of the canons critically assessed in class lectures and discussion on these areas.
Aims
The module aims to give the student a critical introduction to the canon law of the People of God in the Latin Catholic Church.
Assessment
The module will be assessed by participation in two seminars and a 3,000 word paper.
