Syllabus

This module provides an informed understanding of the significance of Clare of Assisi in early Franciscan History as well as information and insight into her personal story and the expression of the Poor Clares, commonly given the name ‘contemplative wing’ of the Franciscan Movement.

The module addresses the challenges to traditional assumptions found in contemporary studies of Clare and offers a basis from which to assess many of the new insights which are emerging.

 Aims

-  To chart the inner dynamic of the journey of Clare of Assisi
-  To inform students about historical circumstances and environment of Clare which shaped her Franciscan living
-  To provide a method for reading and interpreting texts in contemporary scholarship on Clare of Assisi
