Syllabus

The module will sketch Franciscan history during the period. Particular emphasis will be given to relationships between the Franciscan movements and the papacy, to the tensions that eventually resulted in a split within the first order, the reform movements within the order and the influence of Franciscans in the wider Christian community.

 Aims

- to provide an overview of the major trends and events of the Franciscan movement from the time of Bonaventure to 1517.
- to give a survey of the history of the Franciscan movement during this period.
- to situate the various reforms to 1517 in their historical context
