Hebrew Bibilical Literature
Module Code: 409TBL Credits: 10 Contact Hours: 30 Level: 4 Lecturer: Seamus Mulholland OFM
Syllabus
This module introduces students to the bible as a literary text, albeit a literary text to which it is difficult to assign a type/genre descriptor. This module introduces various forms and genres of literature in the bible: myth, poetry, legend, saga, hymn, wisdom, prophecy, history etc. The module will also introduce students to other literatures from the Mesopotamian region e.g. The Epic of Gilgamesh, the Code of Hammurabi, Armana Tablets, as well as their forms of writing e.g. cuneiform.
After identifying the literary genre, the module will then move to apply one or more of the methods of interpretation to designated texts that reflect the genre so that students understand and can apply the tools of criticism to biblical texts. Particular attention is paid to Genesis 1-4 and the Book of the Exodus.
Finally, the module moves to consider the theological significance of the literature as a multiformed story of people’s encounter with their deity at the historical, social, political and religious level.
