Syllabus

This module will examine the philosophical direction and thinking with the advent of Rene Descartes and which continues to emergence in Rationalism, Empiricism, Political Philosophy, Idealism, Phenomenology and Existentialism. Attention will be paid to the most significant thinkers of the period; Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz on the Rationalist side, and Locke, Berkley and Hume on the Empiricists. Among the Idealists considered will be Kant and Hegel and Political theorists will include Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau and Marx. The Phenomenologists will be represented by Husserl [and the ?existential? Phenomenology of Heidegger]. Finally some consideration will be given to Analytical Philosophy especially in Wittgenstein
