Certificate in Philosophy
The Certificate in Philosophy is designed to introduce students to philosophy, philosophical school and philosophical thinking. Students will be introduced to the beginnings of philosophy and philosophical discourse through the Ancient and Medieval Philosophy Module. They will then go on to examine and explore various ’systems’ of Philosophy such as Metaphysics, Philosophy of Religion, Philosophical Anthropology, and the Philosophy of Knowledge [sometimes called Epistemology] and Modern Philosophy.
The total number of credits required to obtain the Certificate Students is 120 and so students write TWO 2,000 word essays per module over the course of the year. The Certificate in Philosophy is an excellent opportunity for students whether they have read any philosophy before or not.
The Certificate will explore the Pre-Socratics, Plato, Aristotle, Neoplatonism, the rise of Medieval Scholasticism, the great thinkers of the Middle Ages. The mind, functionalism, perception, what constitutes knowledge and ways of knowing and understanding are also explored; and the issues of existence, including the existence of God are examined and explored through the work of great thinkers in the area. This is an exciting, challenging programme from the beginnings of philosophy up to the present moment.
