MA Theology

MA Theology

The MA in Theology is a degree aimed at broad exposure to fundamental theological disciplines on an advanced level. The one year course is divided into six taught modules: one, designed to facilitate research methodology, and five arranged to represent depth studies in aspects of academic theology including- Scripture, Patristic, Medieval and Modern theology, Sacraments, Inter-religious dialogue, and Ecumenism. Various other alternate courses are also available as well as the possibility of taking a wide range of courses offered for the MA Theology (Franciscan Studies) if the student’s range of interest is better met in these specific areas of study. Two of these types of courses may be substituted for modules referred to above, which represent the five theological ‘core’ courses for the degree. Students will also have the opportunity to conduct advanced research on a topic of personal interest writing a thesis at the conclusion of the course.

The MA Theology is designed to offer a thorough academic overview of fundamental disciplines within Catholic-Christian theology on an advanced level. As such, it is well suited to the student who may wish to engage in both specific areas of research and a wide range of study. Throughout, the ethos of the Franciscan Intellectual Tradition informs and is informed by the larger context of theology as it has evolved in the long history of the Church. The course offers those who work in ministry (ordained or lay) an opportunity to deepen and develop an understanding of theology, to enhance ministerial skills and to reflect theologically on the experience of ministry. The interdisciplinary emphasis augments the integration of theology and practice. The MA Theology can also be used as a foundation for the Doctorate in Ministry or for a research degree (M.Phil. or Ph.D.).
